our dining room

Did you realize that I still have two rooms (and a bathroom and balcony) to cover in my tour of our apartment? The dining room and master bedroom are proving to be my most frustrating and challenging spaces. Hence, I haven’t been anxious to discuss.

Here’s what the dining room looked like when we bought it and what it looks like roughly now.

This room just feels like an afterthought of the living space, to which its adjoined. At first, I couldn’t put my finger on the design problem. Now, I realize it’s obvious – the room is entirely brown. I was excited to add the window shades to keep the sun from beating on our backs in the mornings. However, I picked the wrong rattan color. The room feels like a big, brown, wood hole. Also, the ladder back chairs are way too small. The rooms needs a clear, clean eye line out the window and, right now, it’s just too cluttered.

Here’s what I need to do to remedy this:

A note on the door to the patio… one of the challenges to this room is that the patio door swings open into the dining room  so you have to leave enough room between the wall table. We could probably have accommodated an even wider table if that weren’t the case. So if we replace the one big door with french doors (that fit into the single door frame) it would go a long way in reducing the door swing space which might allow us more room for a bar on the kitchen side.
